Direct appeal is the first, and often the best, step to challenge a wrongful conviction. Whether it's challenging evidence obtained in violation of the constitution, or a coerced confession, or an illegal sentence, direct appeal is the place to begin.
Appeals are a unique area of the law, with complexities and technicalities all their own. Because direct appeal is the principal forum to challenge the government's actions at trial - the lawfulness of the police, the propriety of the prosecutor, and the legal basis of the trial judge's rulings - it can be fierce litigation. You need an experienced advocate on your side. Do not assume that the attorney who handled your trial is the right person to handle the appeal.
Our attorneys have represented hundreds of individuals on direct appeal, from misdemeanor crimes through capital murder. Many of these appeals resulted in reduced sentences, new trials, or even outright acquittals. It is never too late to undo what went before. You, or your loved one, can regain your freedom and restore your reputation.
