Our office represents all persons involved in the criminal justice system, and that includes victims. We are strong supporters of Oregon's victim's rights laws. Under those laws, if you are the victim of a crime, you have a right to be heard, and a right to meaningful participation in the process.
Unfortunately, many victims assume that the prosecutor represents their interests. Not true. The prosecutor represents the government, and they have many interests that may not benefit the victim at all, including speedy resolution of cases, saving money, saving time, and saving face.
For example, is the prosecutor contemplating a plea deal for your perpetrator? Did you know you have a right to participation in those negotiations? Don't be the only person at the negotiating table without counsel.
For some victims, the best way to be heard is to hire their own attorney. The criminal justice system can be a steamroller, and forget that there are human faces, feelings, and lives behind the police reports. Don't get lost in that system. We're here. We help victims speak up. We promise you - you will be heard.
