Few among us have perfect relationships. And while all relationships encounter rough patches, where tempers are strained and voices are raised, there is a line beyond which the law will get involved.
Domestic disputes are a very common area of prosecution in Oregon. Even relatively minor spats can land a spouse, or partner, in jail. And many county prosecutors have a zero tolerance policy for cases labeled as domestic violence.
Many people believe that if they don't "press charges" any case against their loved one will be dropped. This is not so. Once a report of domestic violence is made, the decision to prosecute is in the hand of the state. It is not uncommon for someone to become a reluctant witnesses against their spouse, caught in a criminal case they deeply wish would just go away.
Finally, a conviction for domestic violence can seriously threaten a family trying to rebuild and recover. It is common for one spouse to be prohibited from seeing the other, or even from going to his or her own home.
If you, or a loved one, are accused of domestic violence you need immediate help. You need an advocate who will defend you, and your ability to work through this difficult time as a family.
