We work with victims of crime both in the criminal justice system, as well as in civil court in actions for damages as a result of the crime. But for some victims, the immigration consequences are the most pressing. But there is help. There is now legislation permitting certain crime victims, and battered spouses, to obtain legal status, even without a U.S. sponsor. For example:
VAWA
Normally a foreign citizen needs a U.S. citizen, or LPR, to sponsor their immigration. However, the Violence Against Women Act allows for certain abused spouses, or crime victims, to self-sponsor and achieve lawful status, even if their citizen or LPR spouse is incarcerated.
